World Games 2017 in Wroclaw, Poland
Friday, 13 January 2012 22:12

The World Games 2017 will take place in Wroclaw, Poland.

This decision was announced by Mr Ron Froehlich, President of the International World Games Association, on the occasion of the awarding ceremony in the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switserland. In its meeting on Wednesday 11 January 2012 the IWGA Executive Committee had noted that Cape Town (RSA) had withdrawn its bid for financial reasons, and had made a final assessment of the Bids from Wroclaw (POL) and Budapest (HUN) and before opting to award the 10th edition of The World Games to Wroclaw.  The agreement with the next host city will be signed in Quebec, Canada, on 21 May 2012 in the context of the IWGA Annual General Meeting.

The 9th edition of The World Games will be staged next year in Cali, Colombia; 25 July - 4 August 2013.

Giving reasons for the decision in favour of Wroclaw, President Ron Froehlich mentioned the excellent bid presented by the host city."We are happy to present our sports in Wroclaw in the summer of 2017, and we are sure that we will be offered optimal conditions for our sportsmen and women there. All the bids we received were of very high quality, and it was not easy for us to reach a decision." The multi-sport event showcases 30-plus sports - amongat others korfball - and is the pinnacle of the year for 4,400 athletes (including the invitational sports) from over 90 countries.

Wroclaw offers all prerequisites to stage an event like The World Games. This does not only refer to the required sporting venues and infrastructure. The city also has a record as a host of big sports events and can count on the support of the city administration, the government and the National Olympic Committee.
