WC'03 Day 8: B-group's matches; European teams prevail
Wednesday, 05 November 2003 00:00

Game 17: Armenia - Poland 15 - 10 (6-5)

Both teams contested the first half displaying controlled attacking and close defending where neither side could break away from the other. Poland had many chances through their chief attacker Dabrowski who finished the game with 5 goals. He could have had more, but Poland made a tactical change and used the strengths of their women and their captain Andrzej Czyzak who scored 3 beautiful goals from distance shots. Armenia tried to bridge the gap in the second half but Poland's experience showed through and the Polish team eventually broke away to win.

Game 18: Japan - Slovakia 6 - 27 (2-12)

Slovakia won with ease as Japan failed to maintain the commitment and concentration they showed against South Africa on Monday. The strength and experience of the Slovaks was too much for the speed of the Japanese, who were too often guilty of naïve korfball, giving away intercepts and being drawn into contacting their more robust opponents with depressing frequency. For Slovakia Jana Kolimanova was an imposing presence and Ratislav Stefanicka also showed some nice touches, while among the Japanese Miyuki Sato was full of energy and Naoki Arata worked hard to keep his opponent honest. Japan's host club Ijsselvogels created some excitement in the stands, which was unfortunately not matched on the court.

Game 19: India - Catalonia 10 - 17 (5-10)

After their defeat of Armenia and loss to Poland, India was looking to upset group front-runner Catalonia (Spain), but it was not to be. For the Europeans Lidia Soriano and Xavi Vidal made impressive first half contributions, finding the korf after effective lead-up work from their team mates. Scoring at two goals to one in the first half, the Catalonians eased up slightly in the second, but still out-scored their sub-continental opponents, in spite of a late rally lead by Rashmi Dorothy Nath, who scored two good goals towards the end. Catalonia (Spain) booked their place in the 'mini-final' play off for ninth position to find the top team in Pool B, while India will play for thirteenth against Slovakia.

Game 20: Hungary- South Africa 17 - 14 (11-7)

Hungary and South Africa entered a shoot out for supremacy in this group and the chance to play off with Catalonia(Spain) for ninth place. On form to date the Hungarians were slight favourites, but the Africans had threatened to find consistency since the first day in Zeeland, and this was their last chance at redemption in a tournament where they had thus far failed to meet their own high expectations. The first 28 minutes were even, with most of the South Africans hitting the target, while Hungary's top scorer Viktor Horvath led the charge for his team. Three minutes from the end of the half, though, two quick goals from Nora Molnar broke the game open and Hungary hit a decisive two more to go to the break four up. This margin was maintained for the first ten minutes of the second half, when South Africa's cause was not helped by two penalty misses by Henco van Rooyen, before a well taken shot by Desire Coetzee and more confident execution by von Rooyen of an opportunity expertly made for him by Werner Basson brought the gap back to two. Then Horvath again showed his class to push Hungary back out of range and the two teams traded goals for the rest of the match, South Africa eventually finishing just three behind and no doubt ruing their concentration lapses at the end of the first half.
