Exhibition Mixed Showering, Hundred years of Korfball
Wednesday, 29 October 2003 00:00

Korfball celebrates its centenary this year, marking the founding in 1903 of the KNKV (the Royal Dutch Korfball Union). As part of the commemorations an Exhibition has been curated in 'de Kunsthal' in Rotterdam from 1 November until 14 December.  The name of the Exhibition, 'Mixed showering, Hundred years of Korfball' reflects the preconceived opinion many Dutch non-korfballers have of the sport. Their impression is that, after playing together, male and female korfballers players shower together!

Turning this slightly derogatory preconception around, the eight different themes of the Exhibition celebrate the positive aspects of our uniquely mixed team sport. The seven different spaces bring the history of korfball from its origins to the present day. Themes shown on billboards depict scenes from old photographs, depicting images, emotions and memories in combination with the smell of exercise and a fresh shower.

Themes:

The following themes will be the leading subjects of the Exhibition:

- Mixed showering

- Heroes

- Winning and losing

- Club affection

- The game and the rules

- Clothing

- The future

- The introduction of a new basket

Mixed showering

This theme shows the many different korfball families and korfball marriages which have formed the basis of many korfball clubs.

Heroes

Every sport has its heroes: strong personalities in the game or its administration. This section uses photos and documents to profile the important players, board members and pioneers of the last 99 years alongside images of the best players of 2003, specifically commissioned for the Exhibition.

Winning and losing

There are no winners without losers. Next to the trophies in The Hall of Fame, the losers will show their tears in this real life contrast.

Club affection

It all started in schools and playgrounds in the middle of villages and cities. With the success of korfball a structure of enthusiastic clubs grew with their own buildings outside the centre of the city. The members worked together to make the club financially reliable, sometimes even selling cookies. The clubhouse became a focus for korfball players, their families and their friends, which remains an important factor in the lives of many.

The development of indoor korfball marked a new era. Some clubs began to play on artificial grass.

The game and the rules

Photos, video projections, audio presentations and other media contrast the latest confrontations between korfball players with photos depicting another tempo, another technique and other rules.

Clothing

This unit shows shirts, pants, skirts, track suits, shoes and other sport clothes through the years.

The Future

The final Exhibition unit shows how the past 100 years korfball has developed into the sport it now is, with emerging themes of professionalisation and internationalisation.

The new basket

This area unveils the new basket, is made of synthetic material, a design what will change the image of korfball forever'
