Prof. Inglish Ying-Che Huang, the IKF Regional Vice President for Asia &
Oceania delivered a 15-minute presentation titled “Korfball: A mixed sport for
all” to participants of the 16th edition Study Tour Project for Leaders of
Asian Youth Sports (STPLAYS) in Tokyo, Japan, on 20 November 2006.
The presentation
aimed to introduce the features of sport for all in korfball and the adopted
policies and results of development and promotion of IKF and CTKA.
STPLAYS is an international event supported and funded by Japan’s Ministry
of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT)
and is organized by the International Exchange Department of Japan Sports
Association (JASA).
Since its inception in 1991, this study tour program has aimed to promote youth
sports in Asia. 2006 STPLAYS was attended by 28 delegates representing 14
countries from East Asia including China, Korea, Hong Kong China, and Chinese
Taipei, as well as from ASEAN including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos,
Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
In this year’s training program, information was presented covering a
variety of sporting fields. Included was an update on the current status of
Community Comprehensive Sports Clubs fostered by JASA, the situation of lifelong
sports in Japan, the recent contribution of sport science to the accomplishment
of Japanese international competitions, and the actions of the All Japan Judo
Federation for promoting talent junior athletes to medalists at the London
Olympic Games in 2012.
Prof. Inglish Y.C. Huang was nominated by the Chinese Taipei Sports
Federation to participate in 2006 STPLAYS thus allowing not only a learning tour
for himself but a very rare opportunity to deliberately promote korfball to the
sport leaders from various countries on one occasion.
As well as the presentation of his case study, Prof. Huang lobbied the
participants from the promising new countries through several informal meetings
in an attempt to facilitate tours to introduce and promote korfball in their
countries in 2007-2008.
Ms. Geraldine (Gina) G. BERNARDO and Ms. Maria Natashya (Gina) F. GALAGUAS
from the Philippines Olympic Committee and Mr. Wan Hor FONG from the Olympic
Council of Malaysia agreed to help in establishing the foundation of korfball
development in their countries and more concrete projects of introduction and
promotion are expected to be settled in the coming months. Further stories of
korfball movements in new countries of ASEAN will appear on the IKF website in
2007.
